BLaST IU17 Summer Virtual Internship Program Seeking Industry Partners

BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 is seeing to identify manufacturers that would be interested in partnering with them on their summer virtual internship program.

  • When:  Summer 2021, June-August (as determined by industry partner)
  • What:   60-hours, Virtually-Based, Project-Based and Possibly Paid
  • Who:    High School Juniors and/or Seniors (Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga Counties) Industry partners are NOT limited to these four counties.
  • Additional Pilot Program Details: 
    • Student Interns complete projects designed to support the industry partner as determined by the Industry Partner.
    • Goal:  to provide an opportunity for interns to grow their professional skills and assist with their career decision-making/planning process.
    • Industry Partners may host individual student interns or a pair of student interns, which might maximize the output of a virtually-based internship experience.
    • The weekly schedule will be determined in advance by Industry Partners & Interns.
    • Industry Partners will be asked to assign a mentor to work with student intern(s).
    • A weekly seminar providing support and guidance to student interns will be provided by IU staff.
    • Industry Mentors will be invited to attend the student’s virtually-based final presentation.
    • Industry Partners will complete a brief program evaluation and sign a Certificate of Completion.

A small company in New York is seeking domestic manufacturers to produce Hemp Fabric. The company manufacturers reusable diapers from organic components and is looking for alternative suppliers of hemp woven fabric.

Plastic Spray Bottle Supplier Opportunity

A Virginia manufacturer of cleaning and disinfecting products is in need of reliable new suppliers that can provide plastic spray bottles (32oz) with a maximum height of 10-3/4 inches, including the sprayer. The sprayer should be a trigger sprayer typical of those seen in household cleaning spray bottle category of products. The bottle configurations need to be round because of the labeling processes. Although a single supplier is idea for both bottles and sprayers, they can be two separate suppliers.

Congressman Fred Keller Visits IMC Client Wirerope Works, Inc.

Congressman Fred Keller staying close to the manufacturing industry in his district by visiting IMC client, Wirerope Works, Inc. in Williamsport. Joining IMC and Congressman Keller for the visit with Eric Stahl, Design Engineer and Lauren Beard Master Scheduler.  During the tour, the group covered various topics including the current state of the economy, the wire rope industry, process improvement, the current political landscape and IMC services.



Congressman Keller Visits IMC Client API

CEO Steve Kenepp, the Architectural Precast Innovations, Inc. Management Team of Dustin Klinger, Kim Freed, Dave Kmett and IMC met with Congressman Keller to talk about their business. They were able to include an interesting and informative tour of their operations, describing the significant workforce skills and knowledge, and the complex equipment and processes required to produce their high quality precast concrete forms and components.




Congressman Keller Visits QE Manufacturing / Q Cast

Congressman Fred Keller and his team toured QE Manufacturing’s advanced machine shop and Q Cast’s aluminum casting foundry with IMC this week. Owner’s Chrissy and Matthew Haggerty and their team continue to advance the technologies, capabilities and product offerings of both companies. QE Manufacturing was awarded BAE Combat Systems (large defense contractor) 2019 Silver Supplier of the Year and 2020 Small Business Supplier of the Year.

Free CNC Machine Training for 2021

The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) is offering a new, online CNC machine training program for manufacturers in spring 2021.

An optional weeklong in-person pilot bootcamp training in summer 2021 is also being offered in collaboration with Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee. Future in-person training will be offered across the U.S. after this pilot project.

This training is part of the America’s Cutting Edge (ACE) program, a national initiative for machine tool technology development and advancement supported by the Department of Defense Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment program at ORNL. The ACE program’s intent is to train the next generation machine tool workforce, including future manufacturing engineers, machine tool designers, entrepreneurs and machinists.

The program is free, but registration is required. Registration is open and will remain open through the first few months of 2021.

Note that the online training is a stand-alone offering. Students who finish the online training with a grade of 70% or higher will receive a certificate of completion from IACMI and a copy of Machining Dynamics: Frequency Response to Improved Productivity. The in-person training is completely optional.
